Activities and
Events on the Upper Scioto River
| Community
involvement is essential for
the protection of our valuable aquatic resource. There are numerous
opportunities for schools, social and civic organizations, individuals,
businesses, clubs, and churches to donate time, money or materials to help make
a difference. Children throughout our watershed are also encouraged to
participate, with appropriate adult supervision. |
Preparing for a Scioto River Clean Up |
Hands on
Activities –
Outdoors involvement and sweat equity
 |
Annual
River Clean-Ups – Selected
riverbank and adjacent areas are cleared of debris and litter. The Federation
has completed numerous river clean-ups on more than 10 miles of the Scioto
River. Gloves, trash bags and canoes provided. Volunteers are always needed and
welcomed. |
 |
Adopt-A-Highway
- Federation members have adopted a two-mile section of State
Route 257 along the Scioto River. Cleanups are done four times each
year and usually take only two hours to complete. Volunteers are always
needed and greatly appreciated.
|
 |
Stream Monitoring
– Done periodically throughout the year. Chemical analysis & biological
monitoring of water and its inhabitants at specific locations is done. |
 |
Trail
Blazing – Approximately ¼ mile
of trail has been cleared at the Price Nature Preserve which is adjacent
to the Scioto River in Delaware County. Two scouts earned their Eagle
badges developing this trail. Another scout got his Eagle badge by
building two picnic tables and creating concrete anchor points for
them.

– Personal and public education about water quality and
issues are critical components to proper watershed management. Listed below are
some of the programs available.
You're never too young to learn
about the environment! |

|
 |
In-Stream
Education – Streamside educational
activities include chemical analysis, macro-invertebrate collection, and basic
stream education practices. |
 |
In-
House Education – "Dry" stream
monitoring, models, maps and educational handouts are also available when field
trips are not possible. |
 |
River
Awareness Events – Events are open to the
general public and are the foundation of river awareness. Displays from local
environmental groups, conservation organizations and practices, canoe floats,
and various demonstrations and river clean ups are typical of River Awareness
Events. |
Donations
of any kind or amount are extremely important and very much
appreciated. All donations are tax deductible.
