What can you do to prevent water pollution?

Dispose of household chemicals properly

Never dump pesticides, fertilizers, household chemicals and detergents, vehicle fluids, paint, solvents and other household hazardous waste into a sink drain, storm drain or drainage ditch.

Practice responsible lawn care

Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly and only when necessary.
Avoid the use of pesticides by planting disease-resistant plants and trees. Add birdhouses to attract predators.
Plant trees and shrubs. The roots hold water in the ground slowing runoff.
Avoid using plastic groundcover. Use mulch instead.
Pave less; landscape more. Pave only what is necessary on your property and landscape more to decrease the amount of rainwater runoff from paved areas.
Do not sweep leaves and yard waste to the curb. Dispose of it properly by using a container or paper lawn waste bags. Leaves can clog your stormwater catch basin and cause flooding.

Don't litter

Trash left along our streets, curbs, driveways, ditches and river banks is carried into our rivers and streams when it rains. Don't litter and please help pick up after those who do.

Report potentially hazardous spills or dumping to 645-STREAM.
